Your complete guide to how IPL Photofacial works, how to prepare, and what to expect.
What Happens During an IPL Photofacial?
An IPL Photofacial is a quick, effective, and minimally-invasive treatment designed to improve the appearance and health of your skin. Here's what you can expect during your IPL session:
Fast Treatment Time
Each IPL session takes about 20 minutes, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.
Simple Treatment Process
To begin your IPL Photofacial, you'll be provided with protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the light. A cooling gel is then applied to the treatment area to maximize comfort. Using a handheld device, your clinician will deliver precise pulses of light to target concerns like redness, discoloration, and sun damage—revealing clearer, more even-toned skin with minimal downtime.
Is IPL Painful?
The treatment can be a little uncomfortable but tolerable. Some of our patients describe it as being similar to a rubber band snapped against their skin.
When Will I See Results?
Results from IPL can be subtle at first but continue to improve with each successive treatment, depending on the condition of your skin. Many of our patients require multiple IPL treatments to achieve their SkinFitness™ goals. Typically, IPL Photofacial treatments call for 6-12 sessions spaced 2 weeks apart to obtain desired results.
Maximize Your IPL Results
Use sun protection daily before and after your treatment. Following pre- and post-treatment care guidelines is essential for optimal results. Consistent skincare will support healing and help you achieve healthier, more radiant skin.

How IPL Photofacials Works
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, works by delivering precise, high-intensity visible light pulses that target the pigment (hemoglobin or melanin) cells in skin imperfections. The heat from the light destroys the unwanted pigment, helping to reduce redness and irregular pigmentation caused by sun damage, rosacea, and more.
Advanced IPL Technology for Superior Results
In addition to improving skin tone, the heat from the IPL light also stimulates collagen production, which helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while promoting a youthful, healthy glow.

-
What areas can be treated with IPL Photofacial?
We offer IPL treatments for the Face, Neck, Back, Chest, Arms, Hands, and Legs.
-
How much does an IPL treatment cost?
Your treatment plan will be customized to your personal SkinFitness™ goals, and pricing varies based on this. We can discuss specific pricing, as well as our payment plan options, in person during your free consultation.
-
Does IPL hurt?
The treatment can be a little uncomfortable, but tolerable. Some of our patients describe it as being similar to a warm rubber band snapped against their skin.
-
How long does each IPL treatment last?
It depends on the area being treated and the condition of your skin. More damaged skin and larger areas such as arms require more pulses to complete the treatment, which will take longer. On average, a facial treatment will take around 15-20 minutes, depending on the number of pulses needed for your particular skin.
-
How many IPL treatments are needed?
It really depends on the condition of your skin and your SkinFitness™ goals! Results from IPL continue to improve with each successive treatment, so we recommend incorporating IPL treatments into your SkinFitness™ regimen. Many of our patients choose to keep up their results with a maintenance treatment every few months or as needed.
-
How does a IPL Photofacial work?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It works by delivering precise light pulses to your skin. These pulses target the pigment in skin imperfections, destroying cells and removing redness and irregular pigmentation caused by things like sun damage, rosacea and more from your skin. The result: your skin gets a more uniform, youthful appearance. Not to mention, the heat from the light also encourages collagen production, which improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and gives you that healthy glow.
-
Will I experience any side effects after an IPL treatment?
There are a few very mild side effects associated with this treatment. For the complete list, please take a look at our aftercare instructions.
-
Is there anyone who shouldn't get an IPL Photofacial?
IPL Photofacials are designed for those with sun damage and red or brown discoloration in their skin, and are only safe for patients with a certain degree of contrast between their discoloration and their natural skin tone—meaning fairer skin types. We also can't perform IPL treatments over men's facial hair, even if it's shaved. That's why we require you to have a free consultation prior to your first treatment, where we'll assess your skin and determine which of our many skin rejuvenation treatments is right for you.
-
What should I expect immediately after IPL Treatment?
After IPL, you may experience redness, mild swelling, or a general warm sensation. Areas of preexisting dark pigment may appear slightly darker, but they will naturally slough off within a few weeks. For more information, click here.
-
Is an IPL Photofacial Considered a Laser Treatment?
No, while IPL Photofacials are energy-based, they do not technically use lasers.
-
Is an IPL Photofacial safe?
Yes, IPL treatments are safe and FDA-approved to treat sun damage, rosacea, and more.
